History of North Lawndale Futures....

North Lawndale Futures was developed in 1991 from the action plans* of the Drug Prevention Teams at Hughes and Dvorak Elementary Schools.

The teams were comprised of parents, students, staff & community residents.

Each school, located geographically six blocks apart, was interested in a comprehensive community approach to addressing the concerns of alcohol, tobacco, other drug abuse and gangs.

In response to the needs of the teams, Prevention Partnership, Inc. sought funding to assist in carrying out their vision. Today, in collaboration with local, city and state providers, North Lawndale Futures offers an array of prevention programming.

Technical assistance for action plans was provided by the Prevention Partnership, Inc. 1988.

Curriculum Components:

Future Directions:

The plans are to develop a core of trained youth peer leaders to teach life skills throughout the community. We also envision a van to transport the youth and families throughout the neighborhood for events as well as secure a space to provide services during the evenings and weekends.

Peer Leadership Pledge

We salute our Peer Leadership Pledge*....

As a Peer Leader, I pledge to be a good leader. I pledge to have respect for myself and others. I pledge to learn all I can so that I can help my peers and others. As a peer leader, I pledge to help the world be friends.

One, two three salute!

*The pledge was developed by the peer leaders of the Hughes and Dvorak Elementary Schools; Chicago, Illinois January 1992.
