Prevention Person of The Year,

and Community Activist Rita Asford for the 

Paul Kelly Community Service Award

Prevention Partnership is celebrating seventeen years of service to the community in providing comprehensive, culturally diverse prevention and education services in areas such as alcohol and other drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, anger management, violence, and peer leadership. In carrying out such activities, it functions as a catalyst and management agent for the community, by facilitating a needs assessment and action planning process. Each year Prevention Partnership, Inc., salutes those special people whose actions have made Chicago safer, healthier and in other ways, a better place. On its seventeenth anniversary, Prevention Partnership will salute two of the community's

finest supporters of prevention and health promotion efforts.

Prevention Person of The Year Award

• Judge Greg Mathis was elected to Michigan's 36th District Court in 1995. His election became a national success story and a symbol of hope for urban youth who are struggling to overcome the modern day pressures and hardships of poverty, drugs and violence. A former street youth and high school dropout, Mathis' lawlessness brought him before a judge who cared, a judge who ordered the teenage dropout to get a G.E.D. or face jail time. He obtained his G.E.D. as ordered by the judge and went on to become a committed civil rights activist, public servant and the youngest elected judge in the state of Michigan. Currently, he is the star of the Warner Brothers' "Judge Mathis." television show.

Paul Kelly Community Service Award

• Rita Ashford has been a resident of the North Lawndale Community for over fifty (50) years. She is a product of the Chicago Public School System. She also attended the Loop Junior College. Rita began serving her community over thirty (30) years ago. She has volunteered in the Chicago Public Schools for twenty-five (25) years. She has organized block clubs, parent safety patrols, as well as her own organization "Safety First". She is also a Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (C.A.P.S.) Facilitator for Beat 1011 in North Lawndale, and member of Superintendent Cline's Committee for Better Relationships between Minorities and the police.

People will gather at Loyola University for an awards dinner to publicly salute these two special people, all of who have, in his or her own unique way, made Chicago 

a better place to live, learn, work, and play.
